Manchester United Prepare January move For Former Liverpool Striker as back up for Benjamin Sesko

According to a report by Goal on Friday, October 16, 2026, Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for Darwin Núñez during the January transfer window as they look to reinforce their attacking department ahead of next season.

The reported interest indicates that United are exploring the possibility of bringing in another striker to compete with and provide support for Benjamin Šeško. The club want to strengthen their squad depth to ensure they can cope with the demands of competing across multiple competitions.

Núñez could offer Manchester United a different attacking dimension thanks to his pace, physical strength and aggressive approach to the game. His ability to exploit spaces behind opposing defenders, apply pressure on opponents and create goal-scoring opportunities could make him an appealing option for the Premier League side.

Manager Michael Carrick is reportedly interested in securing a dependable backup for Šeško. Bringing in another recognised centre-forward would give him greater flexibility when selecting his starting lineup, particularly during congested periods when injuries, suspensions and player fatigue could affect the squad.

Although Šeško remains a key figure in United's attacking plans, depending too heavily on the Slovenian striker could create difficulties if he suffers an injury or experiences a dip in form. Signing another forward would help the club maintain consistency while providing Carrick with additional tactical options.

Núñez's experience at the highest level of European football could also work in his favour. The Uruguay international has demonstrated his ability to trouble defenders through his physical presence, movement and attacking runs. However, questions about his finishing and consistency have occasionally attracted criticism, meaning United would need to determine whether he fits their long-term recruitment strategy.

Any potential January deal would depend on several important factors, including Núñez's willingness to join the club, the financial demands of his current employers and whether an agreement could be reached between all parties.

The winter transfer window could offer Manchester United an opportunity to address their attacking needs before the second half of the season. Nevertheless, the club must carefully evaluate whether Núñez possesses the qualities required for the specific role they intend to fill.

At present, the reported interest does not indicate that a transfer is close to being completed. Further developments will be necessary to determine whether United are prepared to make an official move for the Uruguayan forward.

Should the transfer progress, Núñez could provide Carrick with another option in attack while reducing the burden on Šeško. Manchester United supporters will now be waiting to see whether the club turns its reported interest into a formal transfer bid when the January window opens.
