According to a report by Barca Universal on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Real Betis midfielder Facundo Bernal has been handed a four-match suspension following his confrontation with Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal during their La Liga clash last Saturday.
The Spanish Football Federation’s (RFEF) Disciplinary Committee imposed the ban after determining that Bernal’s actions fell under the category of assault in its disciplinary regulations.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Betis midfielder was shown a straight red card in the 54th minute after becoming involved in an altercation with Yamal, who had stepped in during a separate confrontation involving Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez.
The punishment was based on the referee’s report and Article 103 of the RFEF Disciplinary Code, which covers assaults that do not result in injury. Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoechea documented the incident in his official report.
According to the referee, Bernal grabbed Yamal around the neck and headbutted him twice while the ball was out of play. The report also noted that the Barcelona winger did not require medical attention and was able to continue playing.
Under Article 103, an assault that causes no injury can carry a suspension ranging from four to twelve matches. Bernal has received the minimum penalty provided for under the relevant regulation.
The incident began after Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles attempted to help Fermin Lopez to his feet following a fall. Yamal intervened to support his teammate, sparking an exchange with Bernal that quickly escalated.
The Betis midfielder subsequently grabbed the Barcelona winger and headbutted him twice, prompting the referee to dismiss him immediately. His sending-off left Betis with ten players for the remainder of the contest.
Barcelona were leading 3-2 at the time, and the numerical advantage helped Hansi Flick’s side take greater control of the match. Eric Garcia scored eight minutes after Bernal’s dismissal, before Dani Olmo added another goal to complete a 5-2 victory for the Catalan club.
Bernal’s suspension means he will now miss Betis’ next four matches, leaving the club without the midfielder as he serves the disciplinary punishment for his actions against Yamal.
