Man United Suffer £344m Transfer Value Decline In Five Years

Manchester United have reportedly suffered a £344 million decline in transfer market value, highlighting the financial consequences of several costly recruitment decisions in recent years.

According to The Mirror on October 16, 2026, figures from the CIES Football Observatory indicate that the Premier League club experienced a substantial reduction in the value of its transfer investments compared with other leading European teams.

The analysis reportedly attributes approximately £158 million of the decline to losses on players sold by United, while a further £186 million resulted from reduced market valuations of players who remain at Old Trafford.

One of the most notable examples is Brazilian winger Antony, whom Manchester United signed from Ajax for a reported £76.5 million. The club subsequently sold the forward for around £21 million, representing a transfer-fee loss of more than £55 million.

Midfielder Mason Mount and goalkeeper Andre Onana were also identified among the players whose market values have declined, adding to concerns about the financial returns generated by the club’s recruitment strategy.

The figures highlight the risks associated with expensive transfers, particularly when players struggle to reproduce their previous performances or fail to establish themselves as key members of the team. Injuries, limited playing time and changing tactical requirements can also affect a footballer’s resale value.

Manchester United’s reported losses contrast sharply with the growth recorded by several European clubs during the same period.

Eintracht Frankfurt reportedly led the rankings after recording an estimated £448 million increase in transfer market value. Real Madrid followed closely with a rise of approximately £447 million, while Paris Saint-Germain registered an estimated increase of £417 million.

The contrasting figures underline the importance of effective recruitment, player development and strategic squad management. Clubs that identify promising players and help them improve can benefit from stronger performances on the pitch and increased market valuations.

For Manchester United, the reported £344 million decline raises fresh questions about the effectiveness of previous transfer investments. The club will need to make more calculated recruitment decisions in future windows if it hopes to improve its squad while protecting the long-term financial value of its players.
