Real Madrid Consider Jose Mourinho’s Future as Florentino Perez Identifies Potential Replacement

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Monday October 19, 2026, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is reportedly considering Jose Mourinho’s future, with Spanish media reports suggesting a defeat against Barcelona could place the Portuguese manager under serious pressure.

Mourinho returned to the Bernabeu in the summer of 2026, tasked with restoring Madrid’s domestic and European dominance after two trophyless seasons in LaLiga and the Champions League.

However, Real Madrid’s performances during the opening months of the 2026/27 campaign have reportedly raised concerns. They currently trail Barcelona by six points in LaLiga, despite winning their opening two Champions League matches against Inter Milan and Roma.

According to Spanish journalist Juan Jesus, Madrid could dismiss Mourinho if they suffer a damaging defeat against Barcelona in Sunday’s El Clasico at Camp Nou.

Jesus reported that Perez considers the encounter crucial, with a humiliating loss potentially becoming the final straw for the former Manchester United and Chelsea manager.

He wrote on X: “Jose Mourinho’s position is seriously at risk heading into this decisive week, marked above all by the Clásico this Sunday.”

The journalist added that the outcome could determine Mourinho’s immediate future, suggesting the club’s results during the week would prove decisive.

Although Madrid recently defeated Sevilla 4-1, the upcoming meeting with Barcelona remains a significant test. Another defeat could leave them nine points behind their fierce rivals.

Meanwhile, journalist Jorge C Picon has reported growing doubts among senior figures at Madrid regarding Mourinho’s management. The concerns reportedly centre on tactical similarities with last season and certain selection decisions.

Picon suggested that Mourinho still enjoys support from his players, but some executives expected a more noticeable transformation after backing his return and strengthening the squad.

Attention has also turned towards Didier Deschamps as a possible successor. The former France national team coach became available after leaving his position following the 2026 World Cup.

Journalist Sergio Valentin claimed Perez had already identified Deschamps as a potential replacement should Mourinho fail to improve results. However, these reports remain unconfirmed, and Madrid have not officially announced any decision concerning their manager’s future.
