According to a post on its official Facebook account on Thursday November 5, 2026, FIFA Women’s World Cup celebrated Nigeria’s historic achievement on Facebook after the Flamingos became the first African team to reach the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final.
The official post read: “Nigeria are the first-ever African team to reach the #U17WWC Final.”
Nigeria began its campaign with a 2-1 loss to Poland. The team responded with a 2-0 win over Puerto Rico, then defeated defending champions North Korea 3-1 to progress from the group stage.
The Flamingos continued their run in the knockout rounds, beating Mexico 2-1 in the round of 16 and Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-finals. Their toughest test came in the semi-final against Brazil, where a 3-1 victory secured Nigeria’s place in the final.
Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the second half, before substitute Awawu Bashiru struck twice to put Nigeria in control.
Brazil scored late, but Nigeria held on to seal a landmark result for African women’s football. The win made the Flamingos the first team from the continent to reach a final in the competition.
The team’s progress from an opening-match loss to a place in the final was a central theme of FIFA’s social media post.
The achievement also drew comparisons with Argentina’s comeback at the 2022 men’s World Cup, after that team recovered from a first-match defeat to go on and win the title.
Nigeria are scheduled to face Japan in the final at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco.
The match is listed for Saturday, November 7, 2026. Japan will provide a formidable final opponent as the Flamingos seek to cap their campaign with a first title.
Reaching the final is already an important milestone for Nigeria and the continent.
The team’s results have highlighted its ability to respond under pressure, particularly after losing its tournament opener and then facing several challenging knockout matches.
