According to a report by London Evening Standard on Monday October 19, 2026, following guilty verdicts on the majority of the 115 financial charges brought against Manchester City by the Premier League, the club could be subject to a huge points deduction, effectively guaranteeing their relegation to the Championship.
The Daily Mail cites chief sports writer Oliver Holt as saying that a heavy fine and a large point deduction are the most probable penalties.
City was found guilty of most of the charges related to alleged financial wrongdoing by an independent commission. While the club's appeal is ongoing, it is unclear when and how severe the sanctions will be.
According to Holt, the Premier League is requesting that the sanction be revealed prior to the decision on the appeal. We do not anticipate a resolution to the appeal before January's end.
It is also possible to impose an additional point deduction for the upcoming season. City might be able to extend their Championship run with such a punishment.
Many don't see a Premier League ban or a drop to League Two in the near future. Premier League and English Football League operations would be severely disrupted by such a decision.
Under coach Enzo Maresca, City have gotten off to a great start, winning their first seven matches. On the other hand, their title hopes could take a major hit if they face penalties.
Meanwhile, a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest for Arsenal bolstered their position. As a result, Arsenal dropped to second place in the Premier League, three points behind Manchester City.
Holt argued that the match review of Arsenal's loss to Forest should be seen in a positive light. To win crucial games, he said, even the best teams need to play like the rest of us.
It is still unclear how the Premier League season will go for City due to the ongoing situation with their financial charges. Reports indicate that the club could face serious consequences following a substantial points deduction, although the final punishment has not been confirmed.
The title race would be drastically changed and Arsenal's position could be strengthened by a relegation-enforcing penalty. As the disciplinary and appeal procedures proceed, more information is anticipated.
