According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Tuesday October 20, 2026, Como manager Cesc Fabregas has responded to speculation linking him with the Manchester United job, insisting that discussing the possibility would be disrespectful to Michael Carrick.
Fabregas has emerged as a potential candidate to replace Carrick at Old Trafford amid growing pressure on the United boss following a disappointing start to the 2026/27 campaign.
According to reports, Manchester United have won just two of their first 10 matches across all competitions, raising questions about Carrick’s future.
However, Fabregas refused to be drawn into discussions about taking over at the Premier League club when asked about the reported interest ahead of Como’s Champions League meeting with United.
“As I’m sure you can understand, I won’t answer that question because I think that’s not a very nice question,” Fabregas said.
“I don’t think that shows enough respect to a great footballer and manager like Michael Carrick at the helm of a wonderful Manchester United side.”
The former Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder has impressed in his managerial role at Como, who have reportedly lost just one of their opening seven Serie A matches this season.
His work in Italy has attracted attention, with Manchester United said to be considering potential alternatives should they eventually decide to part ways with Carrick.
Despite the speculation, Fabregas also rejected suggestions that United are experiencing a crisis, emphasising that football provides regular opportunities for teams to respond to difficult results.
“I don’t think there’s a crisis in football. I’ve never experienced one. Every three days there’s a game to fight for and win,” he added.
Fabregas also expressed his respect for Manchester United ahead of the Champions League encounter, describing the club as historic and acknowledging the quality of their players.
Meanwhile, according to reports, United’s hierarchy are not yet ready to sack Carrick but could reconsider their position if results fail to improve.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler and former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe have also been linked with the managerial position.
