Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso could receive a significant boost in his quest for the Premier League title if Manchester City are handed a substantial points deduction over their alleged financial breaches.
According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Manchester City could face a “huge points deduction” that might “guarantee relegation” from the Premier League this season, according to journalist Oliver Holt.
The reigning financial controversy surrounding City involves multiple alleged breaches of the league’s financial regulations, including claims of misleading sponsorship arrangements and artificially inflated revenues.
The Premier League reportedly found the club guilty of 80 financial violations, alongside 34 of the 35 charges relating to alleged non-cooperation and obstruction. However, Manchester City have consistently denied wrongdoing and appealed the decision, leaving the final outcome uncertain.
A punishment involving a deduction of approximately 70 points or more could put the club at serious risk of relegation. Nevertheless, the scale of any potential sanction and when it might be implemented remain unclear.
Such a development could have a major impact on the Premier League title race, particularly for Chelsea, who are aiming to win their first league championship in 10 seasons.
Chelsea have reportedly won all seven of their opening Premier League matches under Enzo Maresca, placing them among the leading contenders for the title.
If Manchester City were removed from the championship race, defending champions Arsenal could strengthen their position at the top of the table. Chelsea, Brighton and Liverpool would also have an opportunity to reduce the gap with 21 matches remaining in the campaign.
In the scenario described in the report, Alonso’s Chelsea are five points behind Arsenal. Although the Blues still have work to do, they remain within striking distance of the league leaders.
Chelsea’s attacking strength provides encouragement, with Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Pedro Neto offering several dangerous options in the final third. Neto’s recent brace against Everton has further demonstrated the team’s attacking potential.
In midfield, Moises Caicedo and Jordan Henderson have been given opportunities to play together, while Chelsea could look to add further quality to the department when the January transfer window opens.
Despite their attacking strengths, defensive problems remain a concern, particularly with goalkeeper Emi Martinez and captain Reece James currently sidelined.
However, Chelsea’s clean sheet against Everton could provide a confidence boost as young talents Mike Penders and Josh Acheampong work towards establishing themselves in the team.
The Blues now face Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in their upcoming Premier League fixtures. These matches will provide an important test of their consistency and ability to maintain a serious challenge for the title.
