Chelsea climbed to the top of the Women’s Super League table on Sunday, October 18, 2026, after producing an impressive 6-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. According to a report by BBC Sport, Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter both scored twice, while Sjoeke Nüsken and Maika Hamano also got on the scoresheet to secure the Blues’ fifth consecutive league win.
Tottenham found the net through Matilda Vinberg and Signe Gaupset, but Chelsea’s attacking strength proved too much for the visitors, particularly after the interval.
James opened the scoring in the 25th minute after taking advantage of a defensive error by Toko Koga outside Tottenham’s penalty area. The Chelsea forward regained possession, advanced towards goal and finished confidently from a difficult angle to put the hosts ahead.
Tottenham responded before the break, drawing level in the 41st minute. Julie Blakstad delivered a cross into the penalty area, allowing Vinberg to connect with a header at the far post and restore parity.
The visitors continued to pose a threat after half-time, but Chelsea regained control in the 58th minute. Alyssa Thompson created the opening with an impressive run into the box before sending a low cross towards Carpenter, who finished to put the Blues back in front.
James doubled Chelsea’s advantage just four minutes later. After receiving a pass from Lucy Bronze, the England international produced an excellent curling finish into the far corner to register her second goal of the afternoon.
Chelsea increased their lead further in the 67th minute when substitute Nüsken made an immediate impact, firing a powerful effort into the net to put the hosts 4-1 ahead.
Hamano added another goal in the 86th minute, finding the net with a spectacular long-range strike from approximately 30 yards. Her effort highlighted Chelsea’s attacking confidence as they continued to dominate the contest.
Tottenham managed to respond a minute later when Gaupset won possession near the edge of Chelsea’s penalty area before beating the goalkeeper with a shot towards the near post.
However, Chelsea had the final say as Carpenter completed her brace in the 90th minute plus one. The defender converted Keira Walsh’s assist to make it 6-2 and cap a dominant performance from the home side.
The victory extended Chelsea’s winning run to five league matches and lifted them to the summit of the Women’s Super League standings, providing further evidence of their attacking strength and title ambitions.
