Why Liverpool didn’t hijack Jordan Henderson to Chelsea transfer as Andoni Iraola plan explained

Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has explained why the Merseyside club did not attempt to prevent Chelsea from signing Jordan Henderson during the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Football London on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, Heskey believes Liverpool’s recruitment strategy, which prioritises younger players with greater resale value, played a significant role in the club’s decision to allow Henderson to join Chelsea.

The 36-year-old midfielder moved to Stamford Bridge as a free agent following the expiration of his contract at Brentford and has quickly established himself as an important member of Xabi Alonso’s squad.

Henderson has started Chelsea’s last four Premier League matches, recording two goals and one assist.

His experience has also proved valuable as the Blues manage injuries and changes in midfield, including the absence of Reece James and Enzo Fernandez’s departure to Manchester City.

Chelsea manager Alonso has also been managing Romeo Lavia’s workload, creating further opportunities for Henderson to contribute.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have continued to rely on Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister as their preferred midfield partnership under manager Andoni Iraola.

Heskey acknowledged that Liverpool could have benefited from Henderson’s leadership but suggested the club’s recruitment team had other priorities.

"Should Liverpool have tried to re-sign Jordan Henderson? I think yes and no. I think they'll be happy with the way they're going at the moment," Heskey said.

He added that Liverpool’s recruitment decisions were influenced by the financial considerations associated with signing players.

"Liverpool’s recruitment team have to look at the value of a player when they bring them in. They have to look at ability on and off the pitch, and, normally, their sell-on value as well.

"I think they look at all those aspects, and that's why they're going for younger players. Liverpool’s squad is well-stocked in the middle of the park."

Heskey also suggested that Mac Allister could eventually provide the leadership Liverpool previously received from Henderson.

"Admittedly, the manager would probably say he’s still trying to get the balance and blend right, but he and the recruitment team will be hoping that a player like Alexis Mac Allister could fill that senior role and bring that Henderson-style leadership to the team."

Henderson is expected to receive attention when Chelsea face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup fourth round at Anfield on Wednesday evening, although he could be rested.

The former Liverpool captain spent 12 years at the club, making 492 appearances. His return presents an opportunity to revisit a significant chapter of his career while helping Chelsea pursue progress in the competition.
