Liverpool forward, Cody Gakpo, has expressed frustration over the penalty decisions that went against his side during their 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal, insisting that the team must accept the referee's decision.
Gakpo made the remarks during a pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool's Champions League fixture against Fenerbahce, where he was asked about the controversial penalty incident during Sunday's Premier League encounter. The Dutch international admitted that the decision was frustrating, particularly as Liverpool felt they had strong grounds for a spot kick.
Speaking about the incident, Gakpo said, “Yeah, it can be frustrating at times. But in the end, I think it's a referee's decision.”
He also suggested that Liverpool's fair approach to the game might sometimes work against them when it comes to winning penalty decisions, referencing comments made by the club's manager.
“I think we, as a team, play pretty fair, and maybe we should dive maybe some more, like the gaffer said,” he stated.
However, the forward acknowledged that the referee had the final say and insisted that Liverpool had no choice but to move on from the decision.
“I think in both occasions, you could have given a penalty, you could have given a foul, but they decided not to, and then, yeah, we have to live with that decision,” Gakpo added.
Liverpool's defeat to Arsenal dealt a blow to their Premier League ambitions, with the Reds continuing their efforts to improve their consistency under the new manager.
