According to a report by Vanguard on Friday, November 6, 2026, Equatorial Guinea international goalkeeper Jesus Owono is reportedly considering ending his professional football career following the death of Spanish striker Jesus de Miguel after a collision between both players during a match.
Owono, who plays for Andorra FC, was involved in the incident on Monday, November 2, 2026, when he collided with De Miguel while attempting to clear the ball during their encounter.
The Tenerife forward was left on the pitch after the challenge before being rushed to hospital. However, he died the following morning from injuries described as accidental chest trauma.
Owono was shown a red card for the challenge and has reportedly been struggling emotionally since learning of the striker's death.
According to Spanish sports publication Mundo Deportivo, the goalkeeper is now contemplating walking away from professional football as he battles the psychological impact of the tragedy.
Ana Maye, a close friend of Owono and general coordinator of the Equatorial Guinea men's national team, disclosed that the incident had left the goalkeeper devastated despite efforts by those around him to provide emotional support.
Maye explained that Owono was particularly distressed by the loss suffered by De Miguel's family, especially his young son, who is just 18 months old, and his widow.
The goalkeeper has reportedly been receiving psychological support from his club as he struggles to come to terms with the tragedy.
Owono also took to social media to express his grief, describing the period as the most difficult time of his life. He said he was finding it extremely difficult to process what had happened and was deeply saddened by the striker's death.
He extended his sympathy to De Miguel's family, friends and loved ones, adding that he would approach any questions arising from the incident with respect. However, he said his immediate thoughts remained with the deceased and those affected by the loss.
Meanwhile, De Miguel was laid to rest in his hometown of Navahermosa, in Spain's Toledo province, on Thursday, November 5.
Hundreds of mourners, including relatives, friends and prominent personalities in Spanish football, attended the funeral to honour the late forward.
Among the notable figures present were Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente.
Beyond the emotional toll on Owono, Maye also revealed that members of the goalkeeper's family had faced harassment following the incident.
According to her, some individuals had directed abusive comments at his relatives, with his brother reportedly being labelled a murderer. She added that the family had also experienced hostility from teammates and parents.
