According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Thursday November 5, 2026, Manchester United have reportedly made contact with former France manager Didier Deschamps over the possibility of becoming the club's next head coach.
According to Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna, the Premier League giants approached the 58-year-old in recent days to establish his interest in replacing Michael Carrick at Old Trafford.
However, the report claims that no formal negotiations have taken place between both parties, with Deschamps reportedly not in a hurry to return to management.
The former France international is said to be considering his options and could wait until the next transfer window before making a decision on his managerial future.
Manchester United are currently facing uncertainty over Carrick's position following their disappointing start to the Premier League season.
The Red Devils are reportedly 17th in the league table with seven points from nine matches, having recorded just one victory and four draws.
Although Carrick's side recently ended a nine-match winless run with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Roma in the Champions League, his future at the club remains uncertain.
Manchester United came from two goals behind against the Italian side, with Bruno Fernandes converting a penalty before Matheus Cunha scored twice late in the game to secure the victory.
Following the match, Carrick urged his players not to get carried away with the result, insisting that the team must remain focused on their upcoming challenges.
Meanwhile, Deschamps is an attractive candidate because of his impressive managerial achievements with the France national team.
The 58-year-old guided France to the 2018 FIFA World Cup title in Russia and also led the country to the final of the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
He also won the UEFA Nations League in 2021 before ending his 14-year spell as France manager following the 2026 World Cup.
Deschamps has been replaced by Zinedine Zidane and is now considering his next managerial opportunity.
However, he has not managed a club since leaving Marseille in 2012, having spent more than a decade in international management.
Manchester United are also reportedly considering other candidates, including Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann and Aston Villa boss Unai Emery.
The report claims that United have made informal contact with both managers, although Emery is expected to sign a new long-term contract with Aston Villa.
Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has also emerged as another possible candidate for the Old Trafford job.
Furthermore, reports suggest that Manchester United are not planning to appoint an interim manager if Carrick is dismissed, with the club preferring to bring in a permanent replacement.
United are scheduled to host Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday, November 8, in what could prove to be an important fixture for Carrick as he attempts to improve the team's position.
For now, Deschamps remains one of the names linked with the Manchester United job, although his reported lack of urgency could complicate the club's search for a new head coach.
