According to a report by ESPN on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Venezuela’s surprise 1-0 victory over Germany at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup has opened up an opportunity for Nigeria’s Flamingos to move closer to the semi-finals. The South American team will now face Nigeria in the quarter-finals after the Flamingos secured a 2-1 win over Mexico in their Round of 16 encounter in Morocco.
Nigeria booked their place in the last eight following a determined performance against Mexico. Oluebube Umejiaku gave the Nigerian team the lead before Mary Akpan Dunstan scored the second goal in the second half, putting the Flamingos in a strong position.
Mexico attempted to fight their way back into the contest when Emily Delgado scored late in the match. However, the Nigerian players maintained their advantage until the final whistle to secure qualification for the quarter-finals.
Venezuela’s victory over Germany means Nigeria will avoid one of the strongest teams in the competition at this stage. Germany had entered the knockout rounds after winning all three of their group matches and were widely expected to progress further. However, Diana Bravo scored in the fifth minute to give Venezuela the lead, and her team successfully protected the advantage for the remainder of the encounter.
The result is significant for Nigeria because Germany have previously been a difficult opponent. At the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, the European side defeated the Flamingos 2-1 during the group stage. Nigeria, however, later demonstrated their ability to compete against Germany by winning the third-place match on penalties after an entertaining 3-3 draw.
Despite avoiding Germany, the Flamingos cannot afford to approach Venezuela’s challenge lightly. Their victory over the Germans shows that they have the ability to compete against strong opponents and defend a narrow lead under pressure. Nigeria will therefore need to remain organised while making good use of their attacking opportunities.
The Nigerian team can take confidence from its recent performances, including a 3-1 victory over defending champions North Korea in the group stage and the win against Mexico. These results have shown that the Flamingos can produce strong performances when they remain focused and carry out their plans effectively.
Nigeria finished third at the 2022 edition in India and will now be hoping to go further in this year’s competition. Reaching the semi-finals would represent another important achievement for the team.
However, the opportunity must be settled on the pitch. Venezuela have already shown that they should not be underestimated, and Nigeria will need another disciplined performance to secure a place in the last four.
