Former Manchester United Striker Scores Four Goals in Club-record Victory

According to a report by Manchesterevening News on Sunday November 1, 2026, FC Twente set a new club record with a 9-0 victory over Excelsior Rotterdam, thanks in large part to the brilliant performance of former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst, who scored four goals.

It's not often that a football team achieves a record-breaking victory; around 70 years ago, in the European Cup, Manchester United beat Anderlecht 10-0.

In 2021, under the leadership of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United came dangerously close to matching that historic feat when they defeated Southampton 9-0 in the Premier League, matching their biggest winning margin ever, despite facing nine opponents.

The remarkable win over Southampton was completed by goals from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani, Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes, and Dan James, as well as two from Anthony Martial and an own goal by Jan Bednarek.

In January 2023, Weghorst was loaned to Manchester United by Erik ten Hag, who had asked for his services in the hopes that the Dutch forward could bolster the team's performance in the second half of the season.

But in 31 games for United, he scored just twice, and he was more useful as a buildup player than the reliable scorer one would expect from a conventional center forward.

After getting back to Burnley, Weghorst went on to Ajax. In the summer, he rejoined Ten Hag at FC Twente, where he is now the technical director.

Weghorst scored four goals and was instrumental in Twente's 9-0 thrashing of Excelsior Rotterdam, which was their biggest competitive win to that point.

Weghorst, reflecting on his outstanding performance, admitted on Twente's official website that he seldom experiences such prolific goalscoring displays, stating that scoring four times was unusual for him.

Moreover, Ten Hag can take heart from the historic outcome; his participation in training sessions has raised eyebrows due to the fact that his technical director role is more akin to a board-level role than a traditional coaching appointment.

Long after Sunday's resounding triumph, Weghorst will be able to celebrate a historic result that he helped achieve with an outstanding individual performance, cementing his place in Twente's history.
