According to a report by OwnGoalNigeria.com on Monday, November 2, 2026, Hull City midfielder Tim Iroegbunam has taken another important step towards representing Nigeria internationally after submitting the required documents to FIFA for his change of nationality from England to Nigeria.
The 23-year-old midfielder, who moved to Hull City from Everton during the summer transfer window, was born in England to Nigerian parents. He previously represented England at youth international level but has now decided to commit his senior international future to Nigeria.
Iroegbunam reportedly reached an agreement to represent the Super Eagles following conversations with Nigeria's head coach, Eric Chelle. After making his decision, the midfielder started the necessary procedures to change his international allegiance.
The latest development is that he has submitted the relevant paperwork to FIFA, with the governing body expected to review his application before granting the required clearance.
The report also disclosed that Iroegbunam has already secured a Nigerian passport. He is said to be receiving assistance from a family member who is familiar with the procedures involved in changing international nationality.
Meanwhile, Chelle has continued his efforts to attract footballers with Nigerian roots who are eligible to represent the country. The Super Eagles manager has shown interest in strengthening his squad by bringing in players of Nigerian descent who have developed their careers in European football.
However, Iroegbunam will not be available for Nigeria's forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures despite the progress made in his application.
He must first receive official approval from FIFA before becoming eligible to feature for the Super Eagles. Until the clearance is completed, the midfielder cannot be included in Nigeria's international squad.
His eventual arrival could give Chelle another midfield option as the Super Eagles continue preparations for future competitions.
