According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday October 21, 2026, Barcelona are reconsidering their January transfer plans after their 4-2 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain exposed weaknesses in Hansi Flick’s defensive options.
According to reports, the Catalan giants are exploring the possibility of signing an experienced centre-back or full-back, although their financial limitations could complicate the move.
The development represents a possible change in strategy after Barcelona decided against recruiting a central defender during the summer transfer window. This decision came despite Ronald Araujo’s loan departure and Andreas Christensen’s recurring fitness problems.
The defeat in Paris has increased concerns about Barcelona’s defensive depth. Vulnerabilities across the back line allowed PSG to create repeated threats, while defensive lapses and problems on the flanks made life difficult for Flick’s team.
Joan Garcia’s important saves also prevented the scoreline from becoming worse for the Spanish champions. However, Barcelona recognise that their attacking quality alone will not guarantee success against Europe’s strongest opponents.
Flick previously had opportunities to strengthen his defence during the summer but ultimately decided against making an addition. Financial considerations and his confidence in the existing squad influenced that decision. However, the limitations of his defensive resources are now becoming increasingly apparent.
Barcelona’s concerns have also increased following injuries to right-back options Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde. Christensen’s ongoing fitness difficulties have further reduced the manager’s available alternatives.
Eric Garcia’s absence is particularly concerning because of his versatility and organisational ability. The defender can operate at both right-back and centre-back, offering Flick flexibility and helping maintain defensive structure during transitions.
Consequently, Pau Cubarsi has assumed greater importance within the defensive setup. Barcelona will hope to avoid further injuries to the young centre-back while other options remain uncertain.
An experienced defender could therefore provide valuable reinforcement during the second half of the season.
However, Barcelona’s financial situation remains a significant obstacle. Their restricted salary cap could force them to offload a player before completing another signing. Alejandro Balde is among the players mentioned in discussions about a possible January departure, although any recruitment plans remain uncertain.
