According to a report by Football London on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, Sporting Lisbon's 2-0 Champions League win over Lens put an end to Chelsea youth product Jesse Derry's frustrating stint on the sidelines.
The England youth international, who had been loaned out by Chelsea and was having trouble breaking into the starting lineup, made an immediate impact after coming off the bench.
With the No. 28 jersey that had belonged to Cristiano Ronaldo behind him, Derry came to Portugal full of anticipation.
During preseason, the youngster had a promising showing, scoring against Monaco and making a big impact in Sporting's 7-0 win over Strasbourg.
But once the competitive campaign began, his progress came to a standstill. After coming on as a substitute in Sporting's first two games, Derry went on to play just four minutes in the subsequent six matches.
The forward returned to Sporting but did not play a part in their subsequent victory over Braga, despite scoring a goal and assisting on another during England Under-20s' 3-1 triumph over Italy during the international break.
When Sporting traveled to France to play Lens in the Champions League on Tuesday, his luck turned around. With a 1-0 lead, Derry was brought on in the 73rd minute after going unutilized as a substitute in the previous match against Galatasaray.
The youngster from Chelsea wasted no time making an impression, dribbling past two Lens defenders to set up Silas Andersen, who in turn set up Issa Doumbia for Sporting's second goal.
According to the Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Derry was given a rating of 6 out of 10, for his promising performance in a short amount of time on the field and for his contribution to the goal.
Last season, the youngster made his Chelsea debut and started a Premier League match before suffering a head injury. This appearance is a positive development for him.
Sporting will have a week to rest before taking on the Austrian side LASK. Derry is keeping his fingers crossed that his performance in the Champions League will lead to more regular playing time.
As Chelsea watches the 19-year-old's progress in Portugal, his contribution gives a good indication for the club.
