According to a report by FootballTransfers, on Monday October 19, 2026, Manchester United are expected to focus on strengthening their defence next year, with a centre-back and a left-back reportedly among the club’s main transfer targets.
The plans follow Lisandro Martínez’s public call for more investment after United’s 2–0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League. The defender criticised the club’s summer spending, and reports say he was fined for his comments.
United had attempted to sign Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall during the previous transfer window but failed to reach an agreement.
The club are now expected to revisit their defensive options as they plan for 2027. According to Sky Sports, United are assessing players in both full-back and central-defensive positions.
Manager Michael Carrick has also indicated that the club will consider additions in January, although he said the exact plans remain unclear.
“When the next transfer window comes, you want to plan and make the best of it,” Carrick said. “There’s opportunity because the transfer window is open, so we’ll definitely be looking at that and trying to come out stronger.”
Carrick has faced questions about his future amid speculation over his position, but he said his focus remains on improving the team rather than his own job security.
He acknowledged that United have not reached the level expected of them and stressed that the club’s success must come before any individual.
United have strengthened their attack and midfield in recent windows. Their defence now appears to be the next area the club intends to address.
