According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Barcelona are reportedly reviewing their January transfer plans after their 4-2 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain exposed several weaknesses in Hansi Flick’s defensive options.
Reports suggest that the Catalan club are considering signing an experienced centre-back or full-back to strengthen their defence. However, their financial difficulties could make it challenging to secure a new player during the January transfer window.
The potential change in approach comes after Barcelona opted against signing a central defender during the summer transfer window, despite Ronald Araujo’s departure on loan and Andreas Christensen’s persistent fitness problems.
Barcelona’s defeat in Paris has intensified concerns about the depth and reliability of their defence. PSG repeatedly exploited gaps in the back line, while defensive errors and weaknesses on the flanks created additional problems for Flick’s side.
Goalkeeper Joan Garcia produced several important saves to prevent Barcelona from suffering an even heavier defeat. Nevertheless, the result highlighted the need for greater defensive stability, as the club understand that their attacking strength alone may not be enough to compete successfully against Europe’s top teams.
Flick had the opportunity to reinforce his defence during the summer but eventually decided to work with the players already available to him. Financial restrictions and his confidence in the existing squad influenced that decision. However, recent performances have raised questions about whether Barcelona possess enough defensive quality to sustain their ambitions throughout the season.
The situation has become more complicated following injuries to right-back options Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde. Christensen’s continuing fitness struggles have also limited Flick’s alternatives, leaving the manager with fewer reliable options at the back.
Eric Garcia’s absence is particularly significant because of his versatility and ability to organise the defence. His capacity to play both right-back and centre-back gives Barcelona tactical flexibility and helps the team maintain its defensive shape, particularly when opponents launch quick counterattacks.
As a result, Pau Cubarsi has become an increasingly important figure in Barcelona’s defensive setup. The club will be keen to keep the young centre-back fit while uncertainty continues over the availability of other defenders.
Signing an experienced defender in January could therefore provide Flick with additional depth and stability for the second half of the campaign.
However, Barcelona’s financial limitations remain a major obstacle to any potential recruitment. The club’s restricted salary cap could mean that a player must leave before another signing can be completed.
Alejandro Balde has reportedly emerged among the names discussed in connection with a possible January departure. Nevertheless, Barcelona’s plans remain uncertain, and it is yet to be seen whether the club will make a defensive signing when the transfer window opens.
