According to Football London on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Xabi Alonso has made a promising start as Chelsea manager, despite a few setbacks. Recent wins over Brighton and Manchester United have helped the Blues consolidate their position in the Premier League’s top four.
Chelsea have also suffered a penalty shootout exit from the EFL Cup and league defeats to Tottenham and Brentford. Even so, their performances have provided reasons for optimism.
Alonso’s work has earned him a nomination for the Premier League Manager of the Month award for October. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders has also been shortlisted for an award after a strong display.
Chelsea won three of their four league games in October, beating Bournemouth 5-1, Everton 2-0 and Manchester United 2-0. Their only league loss that month came against Tottenham, a result that may weaken Alonso’s chances of winning the managerial award. Still, the victories—especially the clean-sheet win over Everton—stand out.
Penders is in contention for the Premier League Save of the Month award for his performance against Manchester United on October 31. The 21-year-old Belgian reacted quickly to tip Bryan Mbeumo’s powerful long-range shot onto the crossbar, denying United a goal.
The nomination marks a positive step after Penders’ costly error against Tottenham, when a failed attempt to punch the ball led to an own goal.
In other news, former Chelsea midfielder Denis Zakaria has praised Mykhailo Mudryk’s natural talent, highlighting his pace and excellent shooting. However, he questioned whether Chelsea paid too much for the Ukrainian, who cost £89 million, including potential add-ons.
Before being suspended for a doping violation, Mudryk scored 10 goals in 73 appearances. After returning, he joined Tottenham on loan, but an ankle injury disrupted his progress.
Mudryk’s long-term future is unclear. His Chelsea contract runs until June 2031, and Tottenham could pursue another deal, though Chelsea may struggle to recoup their initial outlay.
