According to a report by GOAL on Monday October 19, 2026, Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly been handed a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine following his controversial fallout with Portugal manager Jorge Jesus.
The Portuguese Football Federation is said to have confirmed the punishment after disciplinary proceedings were opened against the Al Nassr forward following his reported departure from the national team camp.
The controversy began when Ronaldo was left on the bench for Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway. The decision allegedly frustrated the veteran striker, who reportedly believed promises had been made regarding his involvement in the match.
Ronaldo subsequently left the national team camp ahead of Portugal’s fixture against Denmark, sparking widespread debate about his relationship with the coaching staff and his future with the national side.
The incident prompted the Portuguese Football Federation to launch formal disciplinary proceedings while Ronaldo’s availability for future international fixtures remained uncertain.
According to the reported disciplinary ruling, the federation found Ronaldo guilty of an intentional breach of its regulations and imposed a 30-day suspension alongside a €255 fine.
The financial penalty is relatively small compared with Ronaldo’s reported earnings at Al Nassr. However, the suspension represents the more significant consequence, given his continued ambitions to represent Portugal at the highest level.
Ronaldo had previously indicated that he was prepared to accept punishment in order to return to the national team. In a statement addressing the controversy, the forward reportedly made clear that he remained willing to compete for his country once his suspension had ended.
“After my suspension period ends, I will be available, as I always have been, to compete and win with our national team,” Ronaldo wrote, according to the report.
His comments suggest that he has not closed the door on continuing his international career, although questions remain over whether the disagreement with Jesus can be resolved.
The reported decision could make Ronaldo available again during Portugal’s next international break in November. Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark on November 14 before taking on Wales three days later, giving the forward a potential opportunity to return if he remains part of the manager’s plans.
Nevertheless, uncertainty persists following comments attributed to Ronaldo’s sister, Elma Aveiro, who expressed doubts about whether her brother would represent Portugal again.
Aveiro suggested that the situation had left both Ronaldo and Jesus hurt, adding that the future remained unclear. Her remarks have fuelled further speculation about whether the disagreement could have lasting consequences for the relationship between the forward and the national team.
Ronaldo has enjoyed a remarkable international career with Portugal, becoming one of the country's most recognisable sporting figures. Any possibility of his departure from international football would therefore represent a major development for the national side.
