Arsenal Track Atletico Madrid Star Alex Baena Ahead of January Transfer Window

Arsenal are monitoring Atletico Madrid winger Alex Baena as Mikel Arteta prepares to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the January transfer window.

According to a report by FootballTransfers on Thursday, 5 November 2026, Arsenal's scouting department has been keeping a close eye on the Spain international ahead of a potential approach in January.

The Gunners strengthened their forward line with the summer signing of Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge but failed to secure a replacement for Gabriel Martinelli or another starting striker.

Arsenal also missed out on several high-profile targets, including Vinicius Junior, Morgan Rogers and Julian Alvarez.

The club's hierarchy now considers attacking reinforcements a major priority for 2027 as Arteta looks to build a squad capable of competing for major trophies.

Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi, Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz and Brentford's Kevin Schade are among the other players being considered by the north London club.

However, Baena has emerged as an attractive option following his impressive performances in Spanish football.

The 25-year-old registered 40 goal contributions in 78 appearances during his final two seasons at Villarreal before completing his move to Atletico Madrid.

Although he endured a difficult debut campaign at Atletico, the winger has improved considerably this season.

He has scored five goals and provided four assists in 15 appearances across all competitions in the 2026/27 campaign.

His versatility could make him an appealing addition to Arteta's squad. Baena can operate as an attacking midfielder but has predominantly featured on the left wing during his time at Atletico.

While he does not possess the explosive pace of Martinelli, his creativity, technical ability and eye for goal could offer Arsenal a different attacking dimension.

However, a potential arrival could create competition for Eberechi Eze, who also operates on the left flank and as a No.10. The England international has yet to consistently reproduce the form he displayed during his time at Crystal Palace.

Arsenal could therefore face an important decision over their attacking options if they pursue Baena.
