According to Fabrizio Romano on Friday, October 30, 2026, there are currently no negotiations taking place over Lionel Messi's potential return to his boyhood club, Newell’s Old Boys, despite recent reports linking the Argentine superstar with a move back to his homeland.
Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, is reportedly very happy with his situation at the American club. His family is also comfortable with life in the United States, making a return to Argentina unlikely in the immediate future.
The 39-year-old forward remains focused on fulfilling his existing contract with Inter Miami, which runs until 2028. According to the latest information, Messi intends to honour the agreement and continue playing for the club for at least another two years.
Although speculation about a possible return to Newell’s Old Boys has attracted attention among football supporters, there is currently no indication that formal discussions have taken place between the parties.
Newell’s Old Boys are particularly important in Messi's football journey because he spent part of his childhood developing his talent at the Argentine club before moving to Barcelona's famous La Masia academy at a young age.
A return to the club where his football journey began would undoubtedly be an emotional moment for Messi and his supporters. However, the latest reports suggest that such a move is not currently part of his plans.
Messi could even consider extending his stay at Inter Miami beyond 2028, although that possibility will be evaluated at a later date.
For now, the Argentine captain remains committed to Inter Miami, with his immediate future centred on continuing his career in the United States rather than returning to Argentine football.
His supporters will therefore have to wait before seeing whether the legendary forward eventually fulfils the dream of playing for Newell’s Old Boys again.
