Manchester United are reportedly facing the prospect of losing teenage prospect JJ Gabriel to Real Madrid, with negotiations between the youngster and the Spanish club said to be nearing completion.
According to a report by TeamTalk on Friday, November 6, 2026, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has indicated that both parties are close to reaching an agreement, potentially bringing an end to United’s hopes of keeping the highly rated youngster.
Gabriel asked to have his contract terminated in September after becoming unhappy with the lack of opportunities to feature in the senior team. Manchester United rejected the request and tried to convince him to reconsider, but the 16-year-old and his family have remained keen on a move outside England.
Several European clubs, including Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, have reportedly made contact with his representatives. However, Real Madrid have moved into pole position, with Romano suggesting that discussions have entered their final stages.
The journalist believes a verbal agreement is almost in place and that the transfer could become one of the first major announcements of 2027. He also revealed that Madrid have been leading the pursuit for several weeks.
According to Romano, Gabriel’s representatives informed interested clubs on Thursday that the teenager had decided to join Real Madrid because he views their sporting project as the most appealing option.
Despite the progress, an immediate announcement or signing is not expected. Madrid are reportedly keen to ensure that all legal requirements are properly addressed to avoid possible disputes with Manchester United.
Earlier, journalist David Ornstein reported that Gabriel was expected to move to the Spanish capital in January and sign a long-term contract, although the transfer would remain subject to FIFA regulations.
Meanwhile, former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs has expressed doubts about whether leaving Old Trafford would be the right decision for the youngster. He stressed that patience is essential for young players as they work towards establishing themselves in senior football.
Giggs noted that the transition from academy football to the first team comes with significant challenges, explaining that even highly talented teenagers need time to adapt to the demands of regular senior appearances.
He also pointed to Arsenal youngster Max Dowman as an example, arguing that promising players should avoid rushing their development and instead wait for consistent opportunities to progress into senior football.
