According to a report by LiveScore on Saturday October 17, 2026, Manchester United could revive their interest in Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde in the January transfer window, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano providing an update on the defender’s future.
United are expected to strengthen their options at left-back after failing to sign their preferred target, Lewis Hall, during the summer. The situation has become more pressing following Luke Shaw’s injury, while Patrick Dorgu is increasingly viewed as a better fit in a more advanced role.
Balde emerged as a potential target for United during the previous transfer window, with the Premier League club reportedly making contact with Barcelona. However, no agreement was reached, largely because of the Spanish club’s demands.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained that Barcelona were open to selling Balde in the summer but wanted a permanent transfer for a significant fee. The defender’s salary was also a potential obstacle to completing a deal.
“Man United called but there was no right solution. Let’s see what happens in January because Man United were interested but the conditions of the deal were very difficult,” Romano said.
The 22-year-old has struggled for regular playing time at Barcelona, with João Cancelo and Xavi Espart reportedly ahead of him in the pecking order. His limited opportunities could force the club and player to reconsider his future if the situation does not improve.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick recently admitted that Balde was going through a difficult period but praised his attitude in training.
“It’s not easy for him right now, but he’s training, which is the most important thing he needs to do, and he’s training very well,” Flick said.
The German coach also highlighted the competition for places, pointing to Cancelo and Espart as players performing at a high level. However, he insisted that Balde was handling the situation professionally and remaining ready whenever he was needed.
Romano added that several clubs are monitoring the defender, with his agent, Jorge Mendes, in contact with teams over potential opportunities. This could give Balde alternatives if he decides to seek regular football elsewhere.
United’s reported need for a specialist left-back could make them contenders again, but a transfer is far from guaranteed. Barcelona are expected to demand a substantial fee for the young defender, meaning negotiations could prove complicated.
Romano suggested that Balde’s future is worth monitoring, with January or the summer of 2027 possible windows for a move, depending on how the situation develops.
