Nigeria Hopes Of Qualifying For Afcon Takes a Big Setback After Yesterday's Result

According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday, October 15, 2026, Nigeria's hopes of qualifying for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations have suffered a major setback after the Golden Eaglets lost 2-1 to Niger Republic in their opening match of the WAFU B U-17 Championship.

The defeat has put Nigeria in a difficult position, leaving the team with no choice but to win its remaining group-stage match to stand a chance of progressing to the next round of the qualifying competition.

The encounter, played in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, ended in disappointment for the Nigerian youngsters, who had hoped to start the tournament with a victory.

Niger capitalised on Nigeria's defensive shortcomings to take the lead in the 19th minute through Abdoul Razaq Zada. The goal followed an error involving the Nigerian goalkeeper, giving Niger an early advantage and putting the Golden Eaglets under pressure.

Nigeria tried to respond by committing more players to attack, but the team was unable to find an equaliser before the first half ended.

After the restart, the Golden Eaglets continued their search for a breakthrough, while Niger remained organised and focused on maintaining their lead.

Nigeria's hopes of salvaging a point suffered another blow in the 86th minute when Abdoul Rakilou scored Niger's second goal, leaving the Nigerian side with a difficult task and little time to recover.

However, substitute Mubarak Fasiu gave Nigeria a glimmer of hope by scoring in the fifth minute of stoppage time. His late goal offered the Golden Eaglets a chance to fight for an equaliser, but Niger successfully defended their advantage to claim all three points.

Following the result, Nigeria sit at the bottom of Group B without a point, while Niger occupy the top position with four points from two matches.

Niger had previously recorded a 1-1 draw against Côte d'Ivoire before defeating Nigeria. These results secured their place in the semi-finals of the competition.

Côte d'Ivoire are second in the group with one point, while Nigeria occupy third place ahead of their crucial meeting with the Ivorians.

The Golden Eaglets will take on Côte d'Ivoire on Saturday, October 17, in a decisive encounter that will determine which team joins Niger in the semi-finals.

Nigeria must secure a victory to progress to the knockout stage, whereas Côte d'Ivoire only need a draw to claim the remaining semi-final spot.

The disappointing result has placed additional pressure on head coach Eboboritse Uwejamomere, whose team entered the competition with the ambition of improving Nigeria's standing in youth international football.

Nigeria's failure to qualify for the previous edition of the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations has made the ongoing campaign even more significant. Another failure to qualify would be a major disappointment for the country's youth football development programme.

The Golden Eaglets have a proud history in international football, having won the FIFA U-17 World Cup five times. However, their past achievements will not guarantee success for the current squad unless the players deliver the results needed to progress.

The coaching staff must now work on correcting the defensive errors that contributed to the defeat against Niger while preparing the team for the decisive clash against Côte d'Ivoire.

Despite the setback, Nigeria's hopes of reaching the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations have not completely disappeared. A victory in Saturday's match would take the Golden Eaglets into the semi-finals and keep their continental qualification campaign alive.

However, anything less than a win would end Nigeria's participation in the competition prematurely, making the encounter against Côte d'Ivoire a must-win fixture for the Nigerian youngsters.
