According to a report by Football Transfer on Sunday October 18, 2026, several of Europe's biggest clubs expressed interest in signing highly regarded defender Josh Acheampong during the summer transfer window, but Chelsea were able to keep him, giving them a huge boost.
Many see the England U-21 international as a bright future star among young defenders. Concerns regarding his future with the club have persisted ever since he made his senior team debut under Mauricio Pochettino.
Reports indicated that Acheampong's situation was being closely watched by Arsenal, Liverpool, and Paris Saint-Germain.
It is believed, though, that before the season started, new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso met with the defender's representatives and assured them that the youngster would play a significant role in his plans.
It was unclear what Acheampong's future held under Alonso following his eight Premier League starts last season. In the first few weeks of the 2026–27 season, the defender's opportunities increased, and those worries swiftly subsided.
When it comes to all competitions, Acheampong has started six of Chelsea's nine matches this season. As a result of his performance, the Blues were able to win back-to-back league matches against Bournemouth and Everton.
After a 5-1 win over Bournemouth, Chelsea cruised to a 2-0 victory over Everton. Their improved defensive organization was on full display in the second win, which also yielded their first clean sheet of the season.
"The result was professional and solid," Alonso said after Everton's win, praising his team's performance. The squad showed maturity, he continued, by controlling key periods and creating opportunities while limiting the threat from the opposition.
On an individual level, Acheampong has been outstanding, notably in his defensive efforts against Tyrique George and Jack Grealish, both of whom were teammates at Chelsea. He is now Alonso's go-to starter thanks to his defensive prowess, ball control, and ability to create scoring opportunities.
Even though he's only 20, the defender has a lot of potential, so Chelsea can take heart from his development thus far. The way he's been playing, he has all the makings of an integral part of the club's future strategy.
Chelsea will be encouraged by the youngster's development after they risked losing him in the past. It has been reported that talks have started regarding a new, long-term contract, which could ensure Acheampong's continued presence at Stamford Bridge and put an end to any interest from other clubs.
