Mourinho explains challenge Carlos Espi faces while playing with Kylian Mbappe

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Thursday October 15, 2026, Jose Mourinho has explained the challenge facing Real Madrid youngster Carlos Espi as he attempts to establish himself in the first team while competing with Kylian Mbappe for playing time.

The young Spanish striker scored during Real Madrid's dramatic 4-3 Champions League victory over AS Roma on Wednesday night, further strengthening his case for more opportunities despite his limited involvement this season.

Espi joined Los Blancos from Levante in a reported €25 million deal during the summer transfer window, replacing Gonzalo Garcia in the squad. Although he is still adapting to life at the Santiago Bernabeu, his performances have already attracted attention.

However, Mourinho believes competing with a forward of Mbappe's quality presents a significant challenge for any young attacker hoping to earn regular minutes.

“For an attacker to be in the same squad as Mbappe is not easy because Kylian is a hugely important player, and it's not easy to rotate with a player like him,” Mourinho said.

The manager explained that the difficulty was not necessarily related to Mbappe's status within the team but rather the quality he brings to Real Madrid.

Mourinho admitted that it would be difficult to leave the France international out of important matches simply to give Espi more playing time.

“Not because of status, but because of quality,” he added, explaining why replacing Mbappe in the starting lineup would not be a straightforward decision.

Despite the challenge, Mourinho remains impressed with Espi and believes the youngster has the potential to become an increasingly important member of the squad.

The Portuguese coach revealed that Espi was one of three names presented to him when the possibility of Gonzalo Garcia leaving the club emerged.

He also praised the people responsible for identifying the young striker, suggesting that the club had made a good decision by bringing him to Madrid.

“After seeing him, I always thought he'd be a player with an important profile for us,” Mourinho said.

His comments suggest that Espi is viewed as a valuable attacking option rather than simply a player expected to provide occasional cover for Mbappe.

According to the report, Espi has scored three goals in just 38 minutes of playing time this season. That return highlights his effectiveness in front of goal, although he will need more opportunities to demonstrate that he can maintain his form over a longer period.

The youngster also offers different qualities from Mbappe, with his physical presence and instincts inside the penalty area providing Madrid with another option in attack.

Those attributes could prove useful when the team faces opponents who defend deep or when Madrid need a different approach to break down stubborn defences.

Espi's contribution against Roma was particularly important because it came during a dramatic comeback. Real Madrid found themselves trailing 3-1 before the young striker scored in the 82nd minute to reduce the deficit.

Endrick subsequently headed home the equaliser before Antonio Rudiger completed the turnaround in the 90th minute, securing a memorable victory for the Spanish side.

For Espi, scoring in such an important European fixture could strengthen his claim for additional minutes as the season progresses.
