According to a report published by the Evening Standard on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Pedro is expected to remain unavailable for several weeks, while Henderson and Martinez have a possibility of returning to the squad for the upcoming encounter.
Chelsea will travel to the Stadium of Light hoping to build on their impressive 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. Goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer secured an important win, giving Alonso's side three valuable points as they continue their Premier League campaign.
However, the Chelsea manager will be eager to have more players available as the team prepares for another challenging fixture.
Pedro remains the club's major injury concern after sustaining a thigh problem during training. The Brazilian forward had previously struggled with a knee issue and consulted a specialist during his recovery process. The 24-year-old is Chelsea's leading goalscorer and reigning Player of the Season, making his absence a significant setback for the team's attacking strength.
Alonso has made it clear that Chelsea will not take unnecessary risks with Pedro's recovery, despite recognising his importance to the squad.
"He's a key player. We will miss him, but we have to be ready to deal with the injury, and be competitive and try and win with the players we have available."
Pedro could potentially return to action on November 21, when Chelsea are scheduled to face Leeds United.
Meanwhile, Henderson appears closer to making his comeback after missing the Manchester United match because of illness rather than an injury. The midfielder had completed the entire Carabao Cup encounter against Liverpool but developed a fever before the weekend fixture.
Alonso's comments suggest that Henderson's situation is not particularly serious, raising hopes that he could be available against Sunderland.
Martinez is another player who could strengthen Chelsea's options. The Argentine goalkeeper has been recovering from a broken jaw sustained during an accidental collision with Jarrad Branthwaite in last month's victory over Everton. He subsequently underwent surgery.
Alonso indicated that Martinez could return before the November international break, although wearing a protective face mask might be necessary.
Chelsea will continue monitoring both Henderson and Martinez before Sunday's match. While Pedro's absence represents a considerable setback, the possible return of the two experienced players would provide Alonso with a welcome boost as Chelsea look to maintain their winning momentum.
