2026 U-17 WWC: Flamingos Discover Round of 16 Opponents After Group Stage

According to a report by Daily Post on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Nigeria's Flamingos have discovered their opponents for the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup currently taking place in Morocco, with Mexico confirmed as their next opponents.

The Nigerian team will face the North American side on Thursday, October 29, in what promises to be an exciting knockout encounter. Both nations will be hoping to secure victory and advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Mexico booked their place in the Round of 16 after finishing second in Group F, behind Spain. Their qualification was confirmed on Sunday following a narrow 1-0 victory over Australia in their final group-stage fixture.

Citlalli Reyes emerged as the match-winner after scoring the only goal of the encounter, helping Mexico collect three important points and secure a place in the knockout rounds.

Nigeria, meanwhile, progressed from Group B after recovering from a disappointing beginning to their campaign. The Flamingos suffered a 2-1 defeat against Poland in their opening match but responded positively in their subsequent fixtures.

Under the guidance of head coach Akeem Busari, the Nigerian youngsters bounced back with a convincing 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico, keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

The Flamingos subsequently produced one of their most impressive performances of the competition when they defeated defending champions North Korea 3-1 on Friday, October 23.

That important victory ensured Nigeria finished second in Group B with six points from three matches, securing qualification for the Round of 16.

The result also boosted the team's confidence ahead of the knockout stage, particularly considering the quality of their opponents.

On the other hand, Mexico recorded two victories and one defeat during their group-stage campaign. They began with a 2-0 loss against Spain before recovering to defeat Chile 3-1.

Their final victory against Australia completed their qualification journey and confirmed Nigeria as their opponents in the next round.

Thursday's encounter, scheduled to take place in Salé, will therefore bring together two teams that recovered from defeats during the group stage to secure qualification.

Nigeria will be determined to continue their impressive recovery and improve on their previous achievements in the competition.

The Flamingos' best performance at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup came in 2022, when they finished third in India.

Mexico also have considerable experience at this level, having reached the final in 2018 and secured third place at the 2025 edition.

With a quarter-final ticket at stake, both teams are expected to approach the encounter with determination.

For Nigeria, another victory would represent an important step towards achieving their ambition of competing for the world title in Morocco.
