According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Friday October 23, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has refused to rule out making changes to the club's captaincy after being asked whether Bruno Fernandes could lose the armband following their disappointing defeat to Como.
The controversy emerged after United suffered a 4-1 Champions League loss, with Fernandes appearing to question the team's tactical approach during a post-match interview with TNT Sports.
The Portuguese midfielder explained that the decision not to press Como man-to-man was made by the coaching staff, adding that it was the manager's responsibility to assess whether the tactics were correct.
Fernandes was also visibly frustrated when he was substituted in the 66th minute of the match.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Carrick avoided giving a direct answer when asked whether he would consider removing Fernandes as captain.
The United manager instead insisted that his decisions would always be guided by what he believes is best for the club.
Carrick also dismissed suggestions that the situation had divided the dressing room, emphasising that the squad's unity and overall dynamics remained his priority.
The former midfielder declined to reveal whether he had spoken privately with Fernandes about the incident, saying that his focus was on moving the team forward.
Despite the growing speculation, there has been no confirmation that Fernandes will be stripped of the captaincy.
Meanwhile, Carrick expressed sympathy for the midfielder after his family home was burgled while United were playing in Italy. He confirmed that the club was providing support to Fernandes and his family.
