According to a post Cristiano Ronaldo shared on Instagram on November 5, 2026, Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior paid tribute to the Portuguese star after Ronaldo announced his retirement from international football.
The 41-year-old revealed his decision in an emotional video posted on social media, ending a remarkable 23-year career with Portugal. His announcement prompted tributes from players, former teammates, clubs and fans around the world, many of whom celebrated his achievements and impact on the sport.
Vinicius was among those who responded, leaving a brief but heartfelt comment beneath Ronaldo’s post: “Forever number 1!!!!!!” The message reflected the Brazilian’s admiration for Ronaldo and the legacy he has built.
The tribute is especially meaningful given Ronaldo’s place in Real Madrid history. The pair shared the club’s dressing room during the 2018/19 season, when Vinicius was beginning his career in European football. Ronaldo had spent nine successful years at the Santiago Bernabéu before joining Juventus in 2018, and his achievements continue to inspire younger players.
Ronaldo ends his international career with 234 appearances and 146 goals for Portugal, records that make him the men’s game’s most-capped international player and leading international goalscorer. He also helped his country win the 2016 European Championship and the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
His international retirement does not mark the end of his playing career. Ronaldo is expected to continue playing for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.
