Pep Chavarria will fear Xabi Alonso doesn’t fancy him if the latest Chelsea reports are true

According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Chelsea are considering strengthening their defence during the January transfer window, with Pep Chavarria potentially facing increased competition following reports linking the club with Brentford left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf.

Chelsea and Liverpool have reportedly held discussions over a possible transfer for the Senegal international, who joined Brentford from West Ham United for £40 million last summer.

Manager Xabi Alonso made significant investments in Chelsea's defence during the previous transfer window, signing Emi Martinez, Chavarria, Marco Palestra and Maxence Lacroix. However, injuries to Martinez and Lacroix have affected his defensive plans.

Chavarria has also found it difficult to establish himself as a regular starter, with the left-back position shared between him and Jorrel Hato.

Palestra's recent appearance at left-back against Manchester United, despite being naturally right-footed, has also raised questions about Alonso's preferred defensive options.

Diouf, 21, has attracted attention as a possible January signing after impressing with his pace, strength and attacking ability.

His statistics from the 2025-26 campaign show that he recorded more clearances, aerial duels won and successful crosses per 90 minutes than Chavarria. However, the Chelsea defender performed better in tackles and recoveries.

Brentford are expected to resist any attempt to sell a player they only signed last summer, although an attractive offer could potentially change their position.

Chelsea's reported interest in another left-back suggests that Alonso wants greater competition and depth in the position, despite the club's considerable spending on defensive reinforcements during the summer.

Meanwhile, Chavarria will be keen to improve his performances and secure a regular place in the team as he looks to establish himself as a long-term option at left-back under Alonso.
