According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday October 17, 2026, Aston Villa secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Newcastle in their Premier League encounter, with Johan Manzambi scoring the decisive goal to give Unai Emery's side three valuable points away from home.
Newcastle created an early opportunity through Joe Willock, who fired narrowly wide from inside the penalty area in the 16th minute. Aston Villa responded through Nicolas Jackson, whose effort lacked power.
The visitors gradually found their rhythm, exchanging passes and searching for openings. Both teams battled for control, while several challenges produced bookings as the contest became increasingly physical during the opening period.
Villa eventually broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when Joao Gomes delivered an excellent lofted cross into the penalty area. Manzambi met the delivery with a header inside the left post.
The goal gave Aston Villa a crucial advantage before halftime, leaving Newcastle needing a response after the interval. Despite enjoying spells of possession, the hosts struggled to find an equaliser.
Newcastle made attacking substitutions early in the second half, introducing William Osula and Bazoumana Toure in an attempt to increase their threat and put greater pressure on Villa's defence.
However, Villa continued creating opportunities. Matty Cash fired narrowly wide in the 68th minute, while Ross Barkley forced an impressive two-handed save from Lukas Hornicek five minutes later.
The visitors also suffered injury concerns, with Johan Manzambi requiring treatment before being replaced in the 72nd minute. Aaron Wan-Bissaka subsequently left the field injured, forcing another change.
Newcastle pushed forward during the closing stages, but Yoane Wissa sent an effort wide in the 85th minute. Villa's Ibrahim Mbaye also missed a close-range opportunity late on.
Despite six minutes of added time, Newcastle could not break through. Aston Villa defended their advantage to secure a hard-fought away win, with Manzambi's first-half header proving decisive at the final whistle.
