According to a report by Punch on Sunday, October 18, 2026, Alex Iwobi equalled Peter Odemwingie’s record among Nigerian goalscorers in the Premier League after scoring the decisive goal in Fulham’s 1-0 victory over Hull City at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
The Super Eagles midfielder found the net in the 33rd minute to hand Fulham their first league victory of the season and give manager Alvaro Arbeloa his first win since taking charge of the club.
Iwobi capitalised on Hull City’s inability to clear their lines after Sander Berge played the ball to him on the edge of the penalty area. The Nigerian midfielder struck a low shot that deflected off Lucas Herrington before slipping underneath goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.
The goal was Iwobi’s first in the Premier League this season and took his career tally in the competition to 36 goals in 327 appearances. He is now level with former Nigeria international Odemwingie in joint-sixth place on the list of Nigerian players with the most Premier League goals.
Before Saturday’s encounter, Iwobi had created 13 chances in six league appearances, more than any other Fulham player, but had yet to register a goal or assist in the campaign.
His decisive contribution ended that frustrating run while providing an important result for Fulham, who had gone six league matches without a victory.
The match also featured two other Nigerian internationals, with Calvin Bassey captaining Fulham and playing the entire game alongside Iwobi. Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi also completed the match for Hull City.
Fulham entered the encounter under pressure after collecting only two points from their opening six league fixtures under Arbeloa, who replaced Marco Silva in July.
The victory lifted the London club to five points and moved them away from the bottom of the Premier League table, easing concerns over their difficult start to the season.
Hull City, meanwhile, struggled to create clear opportunities despite their promising opening to the campaign, which included a victory over Manchester United and a draw against Chelsea.
Mohamed Belloumi dragged a second-half effort wide of the post in one of Hull’s better opportunities, but the visitors could not find an equaliser. They dropped to ninth position after beginning the day eighth.
Fulham finished the contest with 10 men after Ryan Sessegnon received a red card in stoppage time for a studs-up challenge on Robinio Vaz’s calf.
Iwobi’s latest goal places him behind Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Nwankwo Kanu, Efan Ekoku, Shola Ameobi and Kelechi Iheanacho on the all-time list of Nigerian Premier League goalscorers.
