According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Barcelona are reportedly reconsidering their January transfer strategy after their 4-2 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain exposed concerns about the depth and reliability of their defence.
The Catalan giants are considering recruiting an experienced centre-back or full-back to strengthen Hansi Flick’s squad for the second half of the season. However, the club’s ongoing financial restrictions could complicate efforts to secure a new signing.
Barcelona’s renewed interest in defensive reinforcements comes after they opted against signing a central defender during the summer transfer window, despite Ronald Araujo leaving on loan and Andreas Christensen continuing to experience fitness problems.
Their defeat against PSG has intensified concerns about the defensive options available to Flick. Barcelona struggled to contain their opponents’ attacking movements, while errors at the back and vulnerabilities in the wide areas allowed the French side to create dangerous opportunities.
Goalkeeper Joan Garcia made several important saves to prevent an even heavier defeat, but his interventions could not completely compensate for the defensive shortcomings exposed during the match.
The result has prompted fresh questions about whether Barcelona have sufficient defensive depth to compete against Europe’s strongest sides throughout the campaign. Despite possessing considerable attacking quality, the team could struggle to maintain consistency if defensive problems remain unresolved.
Flick had the opportunity to strengthen his back line during the summer but ultimately chose to rely on the players already available. Financial limitations and his confidence in the existing squad influenced that decision, although recent performances have highlighted the risks associated with having limited alternatives.
Barcelona’s defensive concerns have been compounded by injuries to right-backs Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde. Christensen’s ongoing fitness difficulties have further restricted Flick’s options as he attempts to maintain stability at the back.
Eric Garcia’s absence is particularly significant because of his versatility. The defender can operate both as a right-back and a centre-back, giving Flick additional tactical flexibility when managing injuries or adjusting his defensive structure.
With several alternatives unavailable or facing fitness concerns, Pau Cubarsi has been required to shoulder greater responsibility in Barcelona’s defence. The club will be keen to ensure that the young defender remains fit while his teammates recover.
Signing an experienced defender in January could provide Barcelona with greater depth and help reduce the burden on their existing options during the decisive stages of the season.
Nevertheless, the club’s financial situation remains a major obstacle. Barcelona’s salary-cap restrictions could require them to generate funds or free up space on their wage bill before registering a new player.
Alejandro Balde has reportedly been mentioned as a potential departure, although there is no certainty that Barcelona will consider selling the left-back to finance a defensive signing.
Ultimately, Barcelona’s January transfer plans remain unclear. Their defeat to PSG has strengthened the argument for defensive reinforcements, but Flick and the club’s hierarchy must balance their sporting needs against the financial limitations that continue to shape their recruitment strategy.
