According to a report by Daily Post on Tuesday October 20, 2026, Nigeria’s Super Falcons have dropped seven places in the latest FIFA women’s world rankings but have retained their position as Africa’s highest-ranked women’s national team.
According to Daily Post, the 10-time African champions fell from 36th to 43rd in the global standings released on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
Despite the decline, Nigeria remain ahead of their African rivals, with South Africa occupying second place on the continent, followed by Morocco, Ghana and Zambia.
The Super Falcons’ drop in the global rankings has been linked to their disappointing performance at the 2026 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco, where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals after defeats involving Malawi and Cameroon, according to the report.
Nigeria also suffered a 2-1 loss to South Africa in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup playoffs, further highlighting the team’s recent struggles against competitive opposition.
However, the Nigerian side recorded two victories over Comoros in the qualifiers for the 2028 Olympic Games, providing some encouragement amid their difficult run.
Globally, Spain maintained first position in the rankings, ahead of the United States, Germany, England and Japan. The top five teams remained unchanged in the latest update.
For the Super Falcons, remaining number one in Africa offers some consolation, but the seven-place fall highlights the need for improved results on the international stage.
Nigeria have established themselves as a dominant force in African women’s football over the years, but maintaining that reputation will require greater consistency against strong opponents.
The team will now look to improve its performances in upcoming fixtures and recover lost ground in the global standings.
The next FIFA women’s world rankings are scheduled to be released on December 7, 2026, when Nigeria’s progress will be assessed again.
