Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha might turn out to be a genuine contender for Bukayo Saka's spot on England's right wing in the run-up to Euro 2028. In a report published by talkSPORT late on October 20, 2026, former Chelsea midfielder Jason Cundy said he thinks the teenager is capable of challenging the Arsenal star for a place in the national side.
Ngumoha has drawn notice after an impressive showing in Liverpool's Champions League win over Villarreal. The 18-year-old produced a standout performance as Liverpool fought back from two goals down to claim a dramatic 4-3 win over Villarreal at Anfield on Tuesday.
Ngumoha recorded two assists in the match. He set up Ronald Araujo and Alexis Mac Allister, helping Liverpool complete their comeback. Notably, those contributions earned him the player of the match award.
In addition, Ngumoha made history in the game by becoming the youngest Liverpool player to record an assist in a European competition. At 18 years and 52 days, he broke the previous record set by Michael Owen, who was 18 years and 324 days old when he assisted against Valencia in November 1998.
Cundy thinks the teenager's fearless style could in time put pressure on Saka. The Arsenal winger has been a regular fixture on England's right wing. Yet Ngumoha's recent displays could bolster his case for a bigger role with the national team.
As Euro 2028 draws nearer, the Liverpool youngster has a chance to boost his international prospects. Although Saka remains an established choice for England, Ngumoha's swift progress could bring fresh competition for the right-wing position.
