Cesar Azpilicueta Says Where Chelsea Fans Should Expect Xabi Alonso’s Side to Finish This Season

According to a report by Football London on Friday October 30, 2026, Chelsea legend Cesar Azpilicueta has outlined his expectations for Xabi Alonso’s team this season, insisting that Champions League qualification should remain a major objective despite their inconsistent performances during the opening weeks of the campaign.

Alonso’s first few months at Stamford Bridge have produced mixed results, with Chelsea enjoying impressive victories while also suffering disappointing defeats. Their 6-3 cup triumph over Leeds and away win against Everton have provided encouraging moments.

However, losses against Tottenham, Arsenal and Brentford have exposed some weaknesses within the team. Chelsea currently occupy fifth position in the Premier League standings, collecting 13 points from their opening eight matches.

With Manchester United and Sunderland awaiting them before the November international break, Alonso faces an important period that could determine whether Chelsea can maintain their position among the league’s leading sides.

Azpilicueta has now reinforced the importance of maintaining Chelsea’s traditional ambitions, explaining that the club should continue targeting major honours despite their recent absence from European competition.

During an appearance on ITV Sport, presenter Mark Pougatch asked the former Chelsea captain whether supporters should expect their team to qualify for the Champions League this season.

“For sure,” Azpilicueta replied, making it clear that European qualification should be considered a realistic objective for the London club.

He continued: “The expectations at Chelsea are always high. We are used to fighting for trophies and it’s true that, at the moment, being out of Europe hurts.”

The Spaniard also expressed confidence that everyone at Stamford Bridge is working towards restoring the club’s position among Europe’s elite.

“But I’m sure everybody at the club, the players, the staff, are working hard to get back into Champions League football,” he added.

Azpilicueta understands Chelsea’s expectations better than most, having spent 11 successful years at Stamford Bridge. During that period, he won two Premier League titles, the Champions League and several other major trophies.

Nevertheless, Chelsea face considerable competition for a top-five finish, with Brentford, Leeds United, Newcastle United and Aston Villa among the clubs challenging for European qualification.

Their upcoming fixtures against Manchester United at home and Sunderland away will provide Alonso with an important opportunity to strengthen Chelsea’s position.

Positive results could increase confidence in his project, while further setbacks would intensify scrutiny of his management and the team’s ability to meet the club’s expectations.

Ultimately, Chelsea must demonstrate greater consistency if they are to satisfy Azpilicueta’s expectations and secure a return to the Champions League next season.
