According to a report by Football London on Sunday October 25, 2026, even though Arsenal beat Everton, striker Viktor Gyokeres is still on a goal-scoring drought following another frustrating performance. Paul Merson, the Swedish forward's former midfield partner, has been forthright in his assessment of his current situation.
As a result of Mikel Arteta's five substitutions, Gyokeres made his Premier League debut. There were demands for more opportunities after his astute assist to Declan Rice against Bayern Munich.
Nevertheless, the forward had little success in his 68 minutes on the field against Everton, failing to register a single shot before being replaced by Kai Havertz. He set up the first goal for Ezri Konsa.
On BBC commentary, former England striker Chris Sutton echoed the criticism, calling him "pretty ineffective" in reference to his performance. After the game, Merson clarified why Gyokeres had trouble going up against James Tarkowski, the seasoned captain of Everton's defense.
Merson said, "Not really for me" when asked if the Swedish striker was a good fit for the match while speaking with Sky Sports News. Against Everton's physical defensive style, Gyokeres had it tough, he admitted.
According to Merson, Tarkowski's ideal opponent is a physical, traditional center forward who can hold possession and score goals. According to him, Everton's captain was able to dominate the game against Arsenal's new attacking signing from the summer by adopting this style.
He's going to get into a physical altercation, Merson said. "I think he's very underrated, in my opinion," he said, pouring praise on Tarkowski's defensive abilities.
Arsenal have been without Gyokeres's goals since May, despite his best efforts against tough opponents. The 21 goals he scored in all competitions last season stands in stark contrast to his current struggles.
During the international break, the forward showed his versatility by scoring four goals in four matches for Sweden. It would be great for Arsenal if he could regain his self-assurance soon.
In Tuesday's Carabao Cup match against Fleetwood Town, Gyokeres may get another chance. Before their next tough assignment at Anfield, Arsenal might get some confidence back if they score against the League Two opposition.
