According to a report by FIFA.com on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Nigeria’s Flamingos head coach Akeem Busari has insisted that his team are no pushovers after securing a 2-1 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16 of the ongoing 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Thursday.
The Nigerian girls booked their place in the quarter-finals after overcoming a determined Mexican side in a tense knockout encounter, with Busari acknowledging the tactical demands and intensity that come with matches at this stage of the competition.
Speaking to FIFA after the game, the Flamingos coach explained that the pressure of the knockout stage often affects young players, making such encounters more demanding than group-stage matches.
“When you come into this kind of competition, and you get to the knockout stages, it’s more tactical and there’s a lot of intensity involved because they’re young and anxiety comes because it’s the knockout stage,” Busari said.
“Today was a tough game, but we’re no pushovers,” he added.
The victory ensured that Nigeria continued their campaign in Morocco and kept their hopes of progressing further in the tournament alive after a hard-fought battle against Mexico.
According to the report, Oluebube Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 39th minute before Mary Dunstan doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 70th minute.
Mexico reduced the deficit through Emily Delgado in the 90th minute plus 10, but the Flamingos held on to claim the victory and advance to the last eight.
The result also extends Nigeria’s impressive run in the tournament following their 3-1 victory over defending champions DPR Korea in their final group-stage match.
That performance had strengthened the Flamingos’ confidence ahead of the knockout rounds.
