According to a report by Metro on Thursday, November 5, 2026, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes Chelsea youngster Estevao Willian could create a major selection dilemma for manager Xabi Alonso as the season progresses, following his impressive performance against Manchester United.
Alonso previously came under criticism for leaving the Brazilian winger on the bench during Chelsea’s Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool last week, with reports suggesting that the teenager was becoming frustrated by his limited playing time at Stamford Bridge.
However, Estevao was finally handed his first Premier League start of the season against Manchester United last Saturday and responded with an impressive display, helping Chelsea secure a convincing 2-0 victory in front of their home supporters.
Gerrard was particularly impressed by the 19-year-old's attacking qualities, praising his confidence, creativity and willingness to take on defenders. The former England international believes Estevao possesses the kind of attacking mentality that makes him exciting to watch.
Speaking on The Overlap, Gerrard described the Chelsea youngster as an entertaining footballer, highlighting his Brazilian flair, technical ability and determination to take risks in dangerous attacking positions.
The former Liverpool midfielder also praised Estevao's direct approach, particularly his willingness to shoot whenever an opportunity presents itself instead of constantly looking for another pass.
Gerrard compared the youngster's mentality with some of Liverpool's attacking players, explaining that forwards sometimes become too focused on finding the perfect opportunity rather than taking responsibility and attempting to score themselves.
He specifically recalled an attacking move against Manchester United in which Estevao combined with a teammate before producing a powerful effort that forced an excellent save from the opposing goalkeeper.
Gerrard also highlighted another moment when the Brazilian could have slowed down the attack and looked for a teammate near the edge of the penalty area. Instead, he chose to push forward and attempt to find the back of the net.
According to the former Liverpool captain, such moments demonstrate Estevao's confidence and determination to establish himself as an important player under Alonso.
Nevertheless, Gerrard believes the youngster's impressive performance could make team selection more complicated for the Chelsea manager, particularly when Joao Pedro returns from injury.
With Pedro Neto also competing for a place in the attacking department, Alonso will have several talented options to consider, making it increasingly difficult to give everyone regular playing time.
Gerrard's assessment suggests that Estevao has done enough to strengthen his position in Chelsea's attacking plans. His performance against Manchester United has given Alonso another reason to consider handing him more opportunities as the Blues continue their campaign.
