According to a report by Daily Post on Tuesday October 20, 2026, former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has advised the club to remain patient with Michael Carrick despite the team’s disappointing run of results.
United have struggled to find consistency, going six matches without a victory across all competitions, including three defeats. The poor run has increased pressure on Carrick, with the Red Devils sitting 13th in the Premier League table.
However, Ten Hag believes dismissing the current manager would not solve the club’s problems, insisting that United need stability, proper leadership and a clear long-term strategy to return to success.
Speaking to The Athletic, the Dutchman stressed the importance of having competent leaders, the right working methods and sufficient time to build a successful team.
“Terminating his employment would not be the solution. Absolutely not,” Ten Hag said, warning that calls for a manager’s dismissal often come from emotional reactions to disappointing results.
The former United boss also praised Carrick’s coaching abilities, pointing to his work at Middlesbrough and his previous experience at Old Trafford. He expressed confidence in Carrick’s coaching staff and urged the club to allow the manager to implement his plans.
Carrick signed a two-year contract with Manchester United in May after impressing during his interim spell following Ruben Amorim’s departure.
Despite the current difficulties, Ten Hag’s message is that United must resist the temptation to make another managerial change without addressing the wider issues affecting the club.
Carrick will now be under pressure to improve results and restore confidence among supporters as he attempts to steer United away from their difficult run.
