Chelsea have been praised for retaining Pedro Neto, who has developed into an important player under manager Xabi Alonso after previously facing pressure to leave Stamford Bridge.
According to a report by The Athletic on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Chelsea’s sporting directors deserve recognition for rejecting the possibility of selling the Portuguese winger during the summer transfer window, as he has enjoyed an impressive revival under Alonso.
Neto joined Chelsea from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £54 million three years ago after establishing himself as a quality winger in the Premier League.
During his early years at Stamford Bridge, he helped the Blues win the Conference League and Club World Cup. However, he struggled to deliver consistent performances last season, leading to growing frustration among supporters.
His limited goals and assists attracted criticism, while a costly red card against Arsenal in March further damaged his standing with Chelsea fans.
At the time, Chelsea were trailing 2-1 when Neto was sent off for fouling Gabriel Martinelli after receiving two yellow cards within three minutes.
The dismissal angered travelling supporters, with some questioning whether the winger still had a future at the club.
Neto subsequently attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. There were also discussions about a possible reunion with former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca at Manchester City.
However, Chelsea reportedly valued the 26-year-old at £100 million, a figure that effectively discouraged potential suitors and ensured he remained part of Alonso’s plans for the 2026/27 season.
The decision has since paid off, with Neto establishing himself as a valuable member of Alonso’s tactical setup.
The Portuguese international has featured as both a winger and a wing-back, demonstrating his attacking quality while also fulfilling his defensive responsibilities.
His contributions in front of goal have also improved considerably. After scoring five Premier League goals in 34 appearances last season, Neto has already recorded three goals in seven league matches this campaign.
His latest impressive performance came against Everton, where he scored twice to secure a match-winning brace and further strengthen his position in Alonso’s starting lineup.
Neto’s resurgence has also earned him a contract extension until 2032, highlighting Chelsea’s belief in his long-term importance to the team.
Chelsea sporting directors Paul Winstanley, Joe Shields and Sam Jewell have faced criticism over their recruitment decisions under the club’s BlueCo ownership. Nevertheless, their decision to retain Neto despite mounting pressure for his departure has proved to be a move worthy of praise.
