According to a report by BBC Sport on Sunday October 25, 2026, Liverpool have received an encouraging initial update on Florian Wirtz after the midfielder was forced off with an ankle injury during their 2-0 Premier League victory over Brighton and Hove Albion.
The German international was substituted in the 65th minute at Anfield on Sunday after twisting his ankle while attempting to stop a Brighton attack near his own penalty area.
Wirtz received treatment on the pitch before being replaced by Trey Nyoni, raising concerns about his availability for Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures.
However, Andoni Iraola offered a positive assessment of the injury, suggesting that it did not appear to be serious while stressing that further checks would be required.
“Unfortunately, he had to leave the pitch with a small twist of the ankle,” Iraola said. “It doesn't look very big, but we are playing every three days so we need to see where he is.”
Wirtz also appeared optimistic when speaking to BBC Sport, although he acknowledged that the medical team would need to examine the injury before its severity could be established.
“I think it should be alright,” the midfielder said. “It's not too bad. I don't know much yet, we have to check it but it won't be long.”
The injury came after Wirtz had made a positive contribution to Liverpool’s performance against Brighton. His low strike in the 17th minute was deflected into the net by Pascal Gross, with the goal officially credited as an own goal.
Alexander Isak extended Liverpool’s advantage four minutes later, finishing from Bradley Barcola’s cross to put the hosts in a commanding position.
Liverpool subsequently managed the game to secure a 2-0 victory, continuing their impressive run of results and recording another Premier League clean sheet.
Despite the positive result, Wirtz’s fitness will be a concern as Liverpool prepare for a demanding period of fixtures. The Reds are scheduled to face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup before taking on Arsenal in the Premier League and travelling to Crystal Palace.
Any prolonged absence could affect Liverpool’s attacking options, particularly with the club already dealing with other reported injury problems.
Wirtz has also faced scrutiny over his goal output in the Premier League. Although his effort against Brighton was initially significant in the opening stages, it was recorded as a Gross own goal, meaning the German remains without a league goal this season, according to the report.
Nevertheless, his contribution against Brighton offered encouragement, and Liverpool will hope he can build on that performance once his fitness has been assessed.
