Manchester United are reportedly preparing to strengthen their squad in January, with the club identifying three potential transfer targets and considering the possibility of completing two signings before the winter window closes.
According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Friday, November 6, 2026, Michael Carrick’s side are assessing options to improve their defence and attacking department as they plan for the second half of the season.
United spent heavily on midfield reinforcements during the summer, signing Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans. However, the club’s recruitment plans reportedly extend to other areas where further improvements are considered necessary.
Defensive additions are being considered ahead of 2027, while the need for another striker has become increasingly important following the team’s struggles in front of goal this season.
Carrick’s side have endured a difficult campaign and are currently level on points with Crystal Palace, who occupy 18th place in the relegation zone. Their recent 3-2 comeback win over Roma brought an end to a nine-game winless streak.
A report by The Sun claims that United are targeting reinforcements in both defence and attack, with three players featuring on the club’s shortlist.
Manchester City left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri is reportedly being considered as an option, while Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell could offer a less expensive alternative. Mitchell’s current contract is due to expire next summer.
United are also exploring the possibility of bringing in another centre-forward. Benjamin Sesko’s shin injury has added to their concerns, while Joshua Zirkzee could be allowed to leave Old Trafford during the January window.
Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz has reportedly emerged as a possible short-term solution. The Brazilian previously worked with Carrick during his loan spell at Middlesbrough, giving the United manager familiarity with his qualities.
Meanwhile, former United midfielder Paul Scholes has named five players he believes could significantly improve the club’s squad. His selections included Gabriel Magalhaes, Jude Bellingham, Michael Olise, Kylian Mbappe and Declan Rice.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Scholes initially included Harry Kane in his proposed list but later replaced the striker with Rice.
His former teammate Nicky Butt also shared his thoughts on potential additions, identifying Kane, Rice, Lamine Yamal, Lewis Hall and Mbappe as players who could strengthen Manchester United.
