According to a report by Daily Post on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, British broadcaster Piers Morgan has questioned whether Michael Carrick is the right person to manage Manchester United, suggesting that the Premier League club should consider former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte as a possible replacement.
Carrick is reportedly under growing pressure following United’s disappointing performances at the beginning of the Premier League campaign. The team has managed just one victory in its first seven matches and sits 13th in the standings, raising concerns about its direction and ability to compete consistently.
Morgan believes Manchester United require a manager with a stronger personality and the determination to change the team’s fortunes. He identified Conte as a suitable candidate should the club’s hierarchy decide to end Carrick’s tenure.
Speaking on Sports Uncensored, Morgan openly expressed his reservations about Carrick’s managerial credentials, despite acknowledging his achievements during his playing career.
“Michael Carrick. I am not feeling it. He was a superb player,” Morgan said.
The broadcaster’s comments suggest that Carrick’s reputation as a former Manchester United midfielder may not be enough to convince him that the Englishman can successfully lead the club through its current difficulties.
Morgan subsequently highlighted Conte’s temperament and competitive mentality, arguing that the Italian possesses qualities that could help United regain their identity and improve their performances.
“Conte has a problem. He got that fire in the belly which I think United need now,” he added.
Conte previously managed Chelsea, where he won the Premier League title during his first season in charge and later secured the FA Cup. He is widely associated with an intense management approach, tactical discipline and demanding expectations of his players.
These characteristics could appeal to Manchester United supporters who believe the squad requires stronger leadership, greater organisation and improved consistency. However, appointing Conte would also present challenges, as the club would need to assess whether his methods and tactical preferences suit its current players and long-term plans.
The Italian’s demanding approach has also generated debate throughout his managerial career, meaning his appointment would require careful consideration by United’s decision-makers.
Despite Morgan’s recommendation, there is no confirmed indication that Manchester United have decided to dismiss Carrick or initiated discussions with Conte about taking over the position.
For now, Carrick’s immediate priority remains improving results and convincing the club’s supporters and hierarchy that he can deliver the progress expected at Old Trafford.
