Al Ahly head coach Hussein Ammouta faces escalating pressure over his team’s tactical identity and recent performances, according to criticism voiced by former club star Yasser Rayan. Rayan noted that supporters are increasingly anxious because key players have not reached their usual standards under the Moroccan manager, placing heavy demands on a squad accustomed to a dominant style of play.
The tactical direction implemented by Hussein Ammouta has triggered a split among former Al Ahly players and analysts. While Yasser Rayan pointed out in televised remarks that the manager does not traditionally emphasize an aggressive, front-foot attacking philosophy—which clashes with club expectations—other voices have defended the technical staff’s trajectory. Rayan highlighted that the team’s overall level has not yet matched supporters’ high expectations, despite achieving results.
In contrast, Rwandan Army manager Abdelrahim Taleb offered a strong defense of Ammouta in an interview with Yallakora. Taleb argued that the Moroccan coach possesses a modern, European-influenced tactical mindset forged through advanced African developmental structures, urging club fans and management to exercise patience and allow the technical staff a full year to implement their sporting project.
Critical voices within the club’s alumni have raised concerns beyond simple tactical preferences. Diaa El Sayed asserted on Modern TV’s “Stad Masr” program that Al Ahly currently lacks a clear technical identity and struggles to impose its traditional dominance on opponents. El Sayed emphasized that the squad’s collective talent exceeds their current output on the pitch.
Adding a harsher critique, Amr El Hadidy stated during an appearance on Sada El Balad TV’s “El Match” program that the technical staff must make decisive roster adjustments and demand greater accountability from underperforming players. El Hadidy questioned the depth of tactical analysis available to the coaching staff, arguing that recurring on-field errors indicate a need for sharper internal corrections.
Despite the brewing debate among pundits and former players, the statistical record under Hussein Ammouta shows consistent results across multiple domestic and continental competitions. Al Ahly has secured seven victories and two draws across nine total matches since the manager took charge.
In the Egyptian Premier League, the team recorded five wins—defeating Eastern Company, ZED, Smouha, Abu Qir Fertilizers, and Zamalek—alongside draws against El Mokawloon El Arab and El Qanah. Domestically in the Egypt Capital Cup, Ammouta’s side opened with a resounding 5–0 victory over Petrol Asyut. On the continental stage, Al Ahly holds a 2–1 advantage over Uganda’s Kitara FC from the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup round of 32 tie, setting up a decisive return leg.
