Why Wolff isn’t counting on an Antonelli title in Austin

Kimi Antonelli could be just one race away from an extraordinary Formula 1 milestone, but Toto Wolff is keeping expectations firmly in check.

Mercedes’ young championship leader heads to Austin this week with a commanding lead over teammate George Russell in the Drivers’ standings, yet his boss is not preparing any title celebrations just yet.

The United States Grand Prix is the first race at which Antonelli could mathematically clinch the 2026 crown. But Wolff considers that prospect remote, preferring to focus on the points still available rather than the championship permutations.

“I haven’t looked at it from that perspective,” Wolff told reporters in Singapore last time out. “At the moment I have the thought of how many points is it actually and when could he win it.

“I remind myself that this is motor racing and crazy things have happened.”

A title triumph would need a miracle

Antonelli leads Russell by 102 points, with Lewis Hamilton a further nine points behind. Even a victory at The Circuit of the Americas would not normally be enough to seal the title without a disastrous weekend for both of the championship leader’s closest rivals.

“Mathematically also I haven’t looked at the points, but it probably needs the other two, George and Lewis, to retire and him [Antonelli] winning,” Wolff said.

“This is not a likely scenario, but the aim must be to score points, not to lose too many on the others, and like [Singapore], gaining on Lewis, which was unexpected, and then it’s going to come towards him.

“Whether that’s in Mexico or Brazil, or further down the line, we shall see.”

An unexpected twist could nevertheless change the equation. Qatar and Abu Dhabi remain on the official calendar, but Imola is reportedly on standby should the situation in the Middle East force a change.

If a race is cancelled, the reduced number of available points could bring Antonelli’s title celebrations forward.

“Whether Qatar and Abu Dhabi happens, at the moment everybody says so, so you need to go the direction of this is six more races to go, and not four,” Wolff noted.

Keep the focus on the job

Antonelli’s extraordinary 2026 campaign has put the 20-year-old on the verge of becoming F1’s youngest-ever world champion, but Wolff wants him to approach Austin like any other race weekend.

“When you come to the next race, you do the pre-race work,” he explained when asked how to keep Antonelli focused on the task ahead.

“You put the car on the ground on a Friday, you develop it from session to session and optimise it, and eventually hope that your qualifying goes well, and then you concentrate on race day, not spending too much time on thinking about a championship.

“So this is, for me, the best way in order to win a championship.”

For Wolff, the recipe remains simple: maximise the weekend and let the points take care of themselves.

Austin could offer Antonelli his first championship match point, but Mercedes will not be counting its trophies – or breaking out the champagne – before the finish line.
